Touching Upon The Alternative by Janet Rutkowski

2024 Continuity

I believe in 2023 we achieved and we progressed. Like the phoenix we rose from the ashes of pestilence and soared to newer heights. Despite a chaotic world and times of stress we became whole again.

We healed.

For me, personally, 2023 ushered in a time of intense creativity. There were many opportunities to exhibit and I was driven to build new and larger works. Although it was sometimes overwhelming, I found great joy and excitement in the creative process.

I am heading into 2024 with the focus on consistency. A continuation upon this path that I have chosen. Stay on your path and continue to flourish and grow. Already the concepts and circumstances are in play. I will be showing in January and February.

March 2024—stay tuned for the most exciting news!

Beyond the Veil by Janet Rutkowski

2023 The Alchemist

This year will ring in a new time of transformation. It is now important to elevate that which is base whether it be emotional, physical or spiritual desires into sacred geometry. Humankind has struggled through division and isolation caused by the pandemic. We are ready to reconnect with each other and that which is wholesome and positive.

The focus of my work this year will be transforming base metal, rusted, scrap and found objects into that which are desirable, precious and beautiful. As I look towards 2023, I envision the realization of a longtime dream. This year holds the possibility/probability for the creation of public works which will evoke a sense of mindfulness and truth.

Let us work together towards a brighter future.

2022 Looking Towards Our Future

“What stands in the way becomes the way.” – Marcus Aurelius

For the past two years, we have all struggled through what seemed as the unimaginable: the pandemic. We were forced to give up a lifestyle of freedom which perhaps caused a sense of apathy. Yet many creative people found a new energy in containment. We were forced into being alone with ourselves which propelled us into the world of imagination.

During this time I produced a major new group of work entitled “Inner Citadel”. I also began drawing which opened up an exciting world. I was fortunate to have the opportunity to show and sell my work. It appears that the art world, in general, has witnessed a surge of interest and buying for the unrepresented artist. Music and films were the reprieve from boredom. The arts took up the rein to keep our minds off the “doom and gloom”. Parents had time to be with their children to discover a new relationship in the oneness of family. We learned to bake, cook, sew, draw, play a musical instrument, and much more.

2022
I have already started a new series of work which continues the concept of the inner citadel except now we are venturing out of our safety zone. The series is entitled Prophecy is also the title of it’s first sculpture. Where are we headed? The future is uncertain and unpredictable. We are looking for guidance, a sign, and a path. We seek the light at the end of the tunnel. Here we are now facing new challenges. I can only hope that each one of you will seize your day. Live in the now. Trip the light fandango. Choose love over fear. Stay safe. Please subscribe and join the discourses of my new blog listing. looking forward to hearing from each of you.

Art Prevails In Times of Struggle

“Life beats down and crushes the soul and art reminds you that you have one.” – Stella Adler

Throughout history, cultures and artists have faced the struggles of revolutions, war, forced colonization, plagues, and pandemics along with economic depressions. Great empires have fallen, yet their artwork, writings and architecture live on. Art reminds us that we are not alone and that we share a universal human experience. Through art, we feel emotionally tied together and are able to process experiences, find connections, and create solace.

2020 ushered in Coronavirus to a world totally unprepared. Our daily lives were cut short and locked down. Many of us living in big socially active cities were devastated by the aloneness, and yet myself, and many artists I know were propelled into a state of oneness with their work. It became a time to turn inwards and focus. Art is flourishing in the time of COVID-19.

Citadel was forged late in December of 2019 almost as a precursor of what was to come in 2020. The first piece “The Gatekeeper” is synonymous of the ancient guardians of gates and entrances, for example the Sphinx, Janus, and Cerberus. Thus the towers arose. The work became my inner fortress during this time of fear and duress. Then came the lockdown, which led to confinement and loneliness.

As a sculptor I rarely draw. Now safe within my space, my soul longed for the freedoms of the past. The sketching commenced. These works were my soul’s release. They started simply but grew in complexity. Convoluted patterns and multi-colors emerged liken to the automatic writing of the spiritualists.

“The impediment of action, advances action. What stands in the way becomes The Way.” – Marcus Aurelius

In November 2020 I was offered a solo show at the Time Arts Gallery In New York City.

This was the birth of the “Reflections From the Inner Citadel.” The sculptural installation along with the new works on paper was a huge success and well attended. Many pieces were sold. This has inspired new work in this series. Please join my mailing list for future events.
